Why make a website?

I missed the golden age of personal websites by about fifteen years. When I began to use the internet, it had already been reduced to six websites: twitter, facebook, youtube, wikipedia, gmail, and myspace (just kidding about that last one). They were free as in no cost to you but not free in terms of freedom. Unfortunately, these websites have increasingly encroached on freedom of speech and privacy.

This website is my chance to say no to targeted ads, own my own creativity, and protect my data. I realized I am ready and willing to take steps to return to a time before 2000 when everyone and their mom had their own website. Now that I think of it, I’m not sure my mom ever had a website. I should ask her sometime.

The internet is here to stay. In spite of the monoliths of consumerism, there are many great respites to be found. Like many others before me, I am claiming my digital homestead. I hope it is useful for the weary internet traveler, but ultimately, I am making this website for me. I want to leave behind the profiles and likes and set out to an old frontier.

Welcome to the wild west,
Jesse Babcock
